Mike L. Downey made his living from some form of writing almost all his life. He was an award-winning newspaper reporter for two Texas dailies as well as a freelance writer selling to publications like American Songwriter, Runner’s World, Cablevision, and the Romance Writers of America.
He’s been a teacher at the university, community college, high school, and middle school levels. His odd jobs include plowing fields, hauling hay, digging ditches, and roofing a house. He also spent one summer looking for boll weevils in cotton fields.
An avid National Novel Writing Month (now the much-lamented NANOWRIMO) writer for more than a decade, his writing echoes the classic science fiction and fantasy he read as a child. This includes the Big Three – Asimov, Clark, Heinlein – as well as Harlan Ellison and Roger Zelazny to J.R.R. Tolkien. Downey still owns the Issac Asimov I, Robot short story collection he found at age 12 on a trip with his dad to a school surplus warehouse.
Downey’s current reading in the sci-fi/fantasy field includes John Scalzi, Martha Wells, Carrie Vaughn, and Nnedi Okorafor.
